Drill 3 holes 1/4" in diameter about 1/2" away from the edge of the stator - one near each of the leads that's coming out.

If the AC voltage is not equal for all three outputs, or if it is below 60v AC, then you have a bad stator. The manual says to check the resistance across the wires of the stator (should be 0.18~0.28 ohm - my readings come in at 0.7~0.8 ohm). My old KLR had an Electrosport 280 watt stator that did fine with my heated grips, gloves and vest at street speeds of 35-45 MPH, but the monitor showed I was in the 'yellow' range (12 to 12.7 volts) most of the time, and switching off the heated grips would put it back in the 'green' (12.8-13.4).

If you put your meter to volts ac { VAC } and test the output at the stator pins with it unplugged from the regulator you should be putting out 25 VAC per 1000 rpm. so at 3000 rpm you should be putting out between 68 - 75 VAC.

70 VAC would be the total average output of your stator. 15-25 VAC per lead is pretty standard for an OEM stator/ rotor assembly. Some Harley Davidson FL's / Police Bikes have rotors lined with many Rare Earth Magnets and they make an absolute ton of power necessary to power all the electronics on those bikes.

So here is the low down, battery kept dying so I took the engine apart and replaced the stator (the old one had a coil that was completely black). However, during the install, the new stator got dropped into my oil pan, including the plug. I installed the new one and put the bike back together. around 13 sounds about right... to test the charging system just rev the bike up and around 5-6k you should be close to 15v ... if your dont see the voltage raise as you twist the throttle then the charging system is bad... otherwise might be a bad battery.

Jan 13, 2014 · Use a multimeter set to DC volts and engine running to test the DC voltage at the battery. You should see around 14.5 VDC with the engine rev'd up to maybe half throttle. Then flip the switch to AC volts with the engine running and hope to see less than one volt AC with the engine throttled up.
